Montana Bicycle Ride 2013

July 30, 2013 by Paul McClellan 2 Comments

In July 2013 Linda and I rode the Montana Bicycle Ride, a 400-mile loop out of Missoula, Montana, organized by Bicycle Rides Northwest. The route included 6 days of cycling from campsite to campsite. It also included one layover day where we could either ride a route from camp, or take a break from riding and explore the local community on foot.

We arrived in Missoula and checked in on Saturday, July 20, joining about 270 other riders. We spent the night at the Sentinel High School grounds and left our car there for the week.

Loaded Bicycle Tour – Mount Hood Loop

July 16, 2011 by Paul McClellan 1 Comment

It had been two years since Linda, Doug Parrow, and I last rode a self-supported “loaded bicycle tour” together. These bicycle tours involve loading a touring bicycle with panniers and possibly extra bags and riding a route without auxiliary car support. That tour started in West Glacier, Montana, and led up and over Going to the Sun Road across Glacier National Park, up to Waterton Lakes National Park, and back.

This time we decided to try again a route that we had been turned back on in July 2006 – a loop around Mount Hood starting and ending from Keizer, Oregon. For many years this route had been a staple of the Salem Bicycle Club and had evolved over the years as the club gained experience with alternative routes around the mountain.

Doug had led many of these tours and knew the route and its options well. In 2006 we had surrendered to temperatures in triple digits in the Columbia Gorge with the prospect of hotter temperatures ahead on the east side of the Cascade Range. The temperatures were forecast to be twenty degrees cooler this time.

In July 2004 Linda and I joined Bicycle Idaho 2004, a supported bicycle camping tour traveling a loop through Southeast Idaho, Western Wyoming, and Northeast Utah. This was our fourth consecutive Bicycle Idaho tour, including last year’s Bicycle Idaho 2003.

The tour was organized by Bicycle Rides Northwest, a bicycle touring company based in Bend, Oregon.

Multisport Adventure in Costa Rica

February 3, 2010 by Paul McClellan Leave a Comment

In December 1997 Linda and I joined an REI Adventures* multisport adventure in Costa Rica. This included bicycling, whitewater rafting, and ocean snorkeling.

Linda and I were joined by Lando and Mary, bicycling friends from our home town. We had joined them earlier in August on the Oregon Bicycle Ride 1997 and that was a new adventure for us. This trip promised another adventure. It was well organized and led by friendly and professional local staff. We enjoyed it very much.
