Superstition Ridge, Arizona, February 2018

March 6, 2018 by Paul McClellan Leave a Comment

During the last week of February Linda and I camped at Lost Dutchman State Park, northeast of Apache Junction. We spent three nights camped there. On our second day, Tuesday February 27, I hiked Superstition Benchmark (Peak 5057), the highpoint of Superstition Ridge. Superstition Benchmark is the 90th most prominent peak in Arizona with 1817 feet of topographic prominence.

Superstition Benchmark is accessible from the State Park. But I chose to access it from the Carney Springs Trailhead. The route would be shorter and I would be more likely to reach the summit my first time in the area.

Prominence Peaks West of Phoenix, January 2018

January 22, 2018 by Paul McClellan Leave a Comment

On January 15-18 Linda and I camped at the White Tank Mountain Regional Park, located on the west side of Phoenix. The campsites were spacious. Linda enjoyed gravel bike riding and hiking locally and I hiked prominence peaks west of Phoenix.

The White Tank Mountains consist of a series of numerous rocky fault ridges and deep canyons. During heavy rainfall water has scoured out a number of depressions or “tanks” in the white granite in canyons near the base of the mountains. These white tanks are the source of the name of this range.

Siskiyou Prominence Peaks, Oregon, June 2017

July 5, 2017 by Paul McClellan Leave a Comment

In late June Linda and I and our canines established base camp at Lake Selmac in the SW Oregon Siskiyou Mountains. Linda found several bicycling routes to explore in the area while I hiked several Siskiyou Prominence Peaks. The canines enjoyed the new scents of the area but were glad to leave for the open Ponderosa Pine forests of home by the end of our visit. Before this visit the mountains I planned to visit were just names on a map. By the end of the week they each made an impression on me and I left the area with memories and a better appreciation of the Siskiyou Mountains than I had before.

My first goal of the week, on Tuesday June 20, was Grayback Mountain, south of Applegate, Oregon. Grayback Mountain is the high point of Josephine County, Oregon with 7048 feet of elevation. It is also the 49th most prominent peak in Oregon with 2248 feet of prominence. Tuesday morning I drove up the Thompson Creek Road south of Applegate, then took a forest road to the Upper O’Brien Creek Trailhead. The last mile was a bit eroded but the drive in was not a problem for my Jeep.

Pima Air and Space Museum

March 6, 2015 by Paul McClellan 1 Comment

Linda and I visited the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson. It is remarkable how powerful jet engines are to push planes supersonic. Among the very many planes on display were four that my father flew many years ago.

The T-33 Shooting Star was the first jet my father trained in during the mid 1950s. Coincidentally, he was based in Southern Arizona during that time.
